چکیده

Recent progress in the quantitative analysis of Wolf-Rayet stars is reviewed, emphasising the role played by choice of spectral diagnostics, clumping and line-blanketing on derived stellar properties. The ionizing properties of WR stars are discussed, based on clumped, line-blanketed models for WN and WC stars. The role of metallicity and mass-loss is assessed, and the role of H ii regions as probes of predicted Lyman continuum distributions. Suggestions are made for diierences in observed properties of WCE and WO subtypes.

On the Baldwin effect of He II emission lines in WR (WN) stars

We investigate the relation between the equivalent width of He ii emission lines and the monochromatic continuum luminosity at the line wavelength in the spectra of Wolf-Rayet stars. Model stellar atmospheres and spectra are used to show that the equivalent width inversely correlates with the monochromatic continuum luminosity. We find the effect in Wolf-Rayet star models over a large range of ...

Stellar Parameters of Wolf-Rayet Stars from Far-UV to Mid-IR Observations

Recent results for Galactic and Magellanic Cloud Wolf-Rayet stars are summarised based on line blanketed, clumped model atmospheres together with UV, optical and IR spectroscopy. The trend towards earlier WN and WC spectral types with decreasing metallicity is explained via the sensitivity of classification diagnostics to abundance/wind density, such that WR mass-loss rates are metallicity depe...

Spectral analyses with line-blanketed model atmospheres versus stellar evolution models with and without rotation

Context. Very massive stars pass through the Wolf-Rayet (WR) stage before they finally explode. Details of their evolution have not yet been safely established, and their physics are not well understood. Their spectral analysis requires adequate model atmospheres, which have been developed step by step during the past decades and account in their recent version for line blanketing by the millio...

Synthesis Models for Starburst Populations with Wolf-Rayet Stars

The prospects of utilizing Wolf-Rayet populations in starburst galaxies to infer the stellar content are reviewed. I discuss which Wolf-Rayet star features can be detected in an integrated stellar population. Specific examples are given where the presence of Wolf-Rayet stars can help understand galaxy properties independent of the O-star population. I demonstrate how populations with small age ...
